"You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You." — Isaiah 26:3 (NKJV)
Can I tell you something?
It's okay to sit in silence.
Really.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with having nothing to say.
We live in a world that constantly tells us to respond, explain ourselves, defend our decisions, and have an opinion about everything. Social media asks, "What's on your mind?" People expect immediate responses to texts. Work emails keep coming. Family wants answers. Friends want updates.
Somewhere along the way, we've started believing that silence means something is wrong.
It doesn't.
Sometimes silence simply means you're protecting something valuable.
This morning during my quiet time, I did what I usually do. I turned on some music while I got ready for the day. I like to begin my mornings with songs that encourage me, remind me of God's goodness, and help set my heart in the right direction before life starts pulling at me.
Then one particular song caught my attention.
The words said...
"My peace has business hours. Office closed. Come back tomorrow."
I smiled.
Not because it was funny, although it made me laugh a little.
I smiled because it spoke to something deep inside me.
How many times have we left the door to our peace wide open?
How many people have walked right in without knocking?
How many situations have we entertained that never deserved our attention in the first place?
Imagine if your peace had an office door.
Imagine a little sign hanging on it that simply read...
OFFICE CLOSED.
Not because you're angry.
Not because you're being rude.
Not because you don't care.
But because today, protecting your peace is more important than proving your point.
Some conversations don't deserve an audience.
Some arguments don't deserve a response.
Some opinions don't deserve space in your mind.
And some people don't need an explanation.
That can be difficult, especially if you're someone who wants everyone to understand your heart.
I understand that.
I've been there.
You want people to know your intentions.
You want to clear up misunderstandings.
You want to fix everything.
But I've learned something.
Not every misunderstanding needs correcting.
Not every accusation deserves defending.
Not every invitation requires your attendance.
Sometimes God is saying...
"Andrea...
Close the office."
Silence isn't weakness.
Silence is often wisdom.
Jesus Himself demonstrated this.
There were moments when people questioned Him.
Accused Him.
Mocked Him.
And yet, He didn't answer every single person.
He knew when to speak.
He also knew when silence carried more power than words ever could.
We can learn from that.
There is strength in self-control.
There is maturity in restraint.
There is peace in refusing to engage with everything that comes looking for you.
You don't have to attend every argument you're invited to.
You don't have to answer every negative comment.
You don't have to explain every decision you've made.
Sometimes the healthiest sentence you can say is...
"Not today."
Or maybe...
Nothing at all.
I think one of the hardest lessons I've had to learn is that protecting my peace isn't selfish.
For a long time, I thought saying yes made me kind.
I thought always being available made me loving.
I thought carrying everyone else's burdens proved I cared.
But eventually I became exhausted.
My peace was constantly interrupted because I never established boundaries.
Everything had access to me.
Everyone had access to me.
Every problem became my problem.
Every emergency became my emergency.
Before I knew it, I had nothing left for myself.
Or for God.
Maybe that's where you are today.
You're emotionally tired.
Mentally drained.
Spiritually exhausted.
Not because you've done anything wrong...
But because you've forgotten that even peace needs boundaries.
Businesses have opening hours.
Banks close.
Libraries close.
Doctor's offices close.
Even your favorite restaurant eventually turns off the lights and locks the doors.
Why?
Because they can't serve people twenty-four hours a day without eventually running empty.
Neither can you.
You were never created to be available all the time.
There are moments when heaven simply whispers...
"Close the office."
Maybe your peace needs business hours.
Maybe when anxiety comes knocking tonight...
The office is closed.
Maybe when guilt wants another conversation...
The office is closed.
Maybe when comparison shows up through social media...
Office closed.
Maybe when yesterday tries to remind you of every mistake you've ever made...
Office closed.
Maybe when fear starts predicting everything that could go wrong tomorrow...
Office closed.
Come back tomorrow.
Actually...
Don't come back at all.
The beautiful thing about God's peace is that it isn't dependent on what's happening around us.
It comes from Who is walking with us.
Circumstances change.
People change.
Feelings change.
God doesn't.
His peace remains available even when everything else feels uncertain.
Sometimes protecting that peace means turning the phone over.
Stepping away from social media.
Going for a walk.
Sitting quietly with your coffee.
Opening your Bible.
Listening instead of speaking.
Or simply sitting in silence.
Silence doesn't always mean there's nothing happening.
Sometimes God speaks the loudest when everything else becomes quiet.
Don't be afraid of quiet moments.
Don't rush to fill every empty space with noise.
Don't feel pressured to always have the perfect response.
Sometimes your strongest moment isn't what you say.
It's what you choose not to say.
It's choosing peace over proving yourself.
Grace over gossip.
Prayer over panic.
Rest over reaction.
Today, I want you to imagine hanging a little sign on the door of your heart.
It doesn't have to be fancy.
Just a simple reminder.
Office Closed.
My peace has business hours.
And today...
I'm protecting what God has given me.
Tonyelle's Take
Beautiful, your peace is valuable.
Not everyone deserves access to it.
Not every situation deserves your energy.
Not every comment deserves your attention.
You don't owe everyone a response.
Sometimes your silence is your boundary.
Sometimes your silence is your healing.
And sometimes your silence is simply God reminding you that His voice is the only one you need to hear today.
So if someone comes knocking on the door of your peace today...
Smile if you need to.
Pray if you need to.
Then let the sign speak for itself.
Office closed.
Let's Pray About It
Father,
Thank You for being the source of perfect peace. Help us recognize when You are calling us to be still instead of reacting. Teach us that silence is not weakness but wisdom when it is led by You. Give us discernment to know which conversations deserve our attention and which ones should be left outside the door.
Lord, help us establish healthy boundaries around our hearts and minds. Remind us that we don't have to answer every voice when we belong to You. When fear, anxiety, offense, or discouragement come knocking, help us remember that Your peace is worth protecting.
Today we choose rest over striving, trust over worry, and Your voice over every other voice competing for our attention.
May our hearts remain fixed on You, and may Your perfect peace guard our minds throughout this day.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
