A Spiritual Wellness Check

Hello, beautiful.
Spring has a funny way of waking everything up again.
The weather softens, flowers begin showing off a little, and suddenly something happens in our homes. Windows open. Dusting begins. The vacuum comes out. Floors get mopped. Closets get cleaned. Everything gets a refresh.
Spring cleaning reminds us that sometimes things just need to be cleared out so something fresh can move in.
And this week that thought followed me somewhere unexpected — my yearly physical.
You know the routine. You walk into the doctor’s office, sit on that crinkly paper table, and they start checking everything. Blood pressure. Heart rate. Blood work. Then the doctor comes in and starts asking questions.
“How have you been feeling?”
“Any changes?”
“Are you getting enough rest?”
As I sat there answering those questions, something crossed my mind.
We schedule wellness checks for our bodies… but when was the last time we did one for our spirit?
Because if we’re honest, sometimes we walk around spiritually tired, spiritually distracted, and spiritually overwhelmed without even realizing it.
We go to the doctor to make sure our bodies are healthy.
But what about our hearts?
What about our faith?
What about our relationship with God?
Sometimes we need a spiritual wellness check.
One thing I realized during my appointment is that the doctor’s office isn’t there to shame you. It’s there to help you get healthy.
They don’t say, “Well, since you didn’t eat right last month, we’re done with you.”
No.
They say, “Let’s figure out how to get you back on track.”
And God works the same way.
He isn’t sitting in heaven saying, Look how far you’ve fallen.
He’s saying, Come sit down. Let’s talk about your heart.
Psalm 147:3 reminds us,
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
God truly is the Great Physician, and sometimes we need to walk into His presence and say,
“Lord… something feels off.”
Just like a doctor’s visit, the first thing that happens is a check-in.
Spiritually speaking, some of us haven’t checked in with God in a while. Life gets busy. Responsibilities pile up. We move from one thing to the next.
But God is still there saying,
“I’ve been waiting on you.”
And that brings me to something I often think about — the waiting room of life.
Life has waiting rooms.
Waiting for answers.
Waiting for healing.
Waiting for direction.
Waiting for prayers to be answered.
If you’ve ever sat in a real waiting room, you know how it feels. You check in, take a seat, and then your mind starts asking questions.
“How long is this going to take?”
“Am I next?”
“Did they forget about me?”
But just because you’re waiting doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Your name is still on the list.
And sometimes in our spiritual lives we start thinking God forgot about us.
But heaven didn’t lose your paperwork.
God didn’t forget your name.
Your appointment is still scheduled.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us,
“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.”
While we’re waiting, God is working.
The waiting room isn’t punishment.
It’s preparation.
Sometimes God is preparing the blessing.
Sometimes He is preparing the opportunity.
But often, He’s preparing us.
And the beautiful thing about God is that He never reveals something in our hearts without offering healing too.
Jeremiah 30:17 says,
“For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds, says the Lord.”
God isn’t interested in leaving us broken.
He’s interested in making us whole.
Maybe spring really is the perfect time for a spiritual wellness check.
A moment to pause.
To breathe.
To ask ourselves a few honest questions.
Am I drawing closer to God… or drifting away?
Am I spiritually healthy… or just spiritually busy?
And since we’re talking about the Great Physician, let me leave you with a few prescriptions you can hold onto.
Not the kind you pick up at the pharmacy… the kind you keep in your heart.
Prescription #1: For anxiety and worry
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.”
— Philippians 4:6
Prescription #2: For when you feel forgotten
“I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
— Hebrews 13:5
Prescription #3: For when life feels overwhelming
“Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
— 1 Peter 5:7
Prescription #4: For when your heart needs a refresh
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.”
— Psalm 51:10
And maybe the most important prescription of all…
Love.
Because sometimes the healthiest thing we can do for our souls is return to love — loving God and loving others.
Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-39,
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart… and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Love heals.
Love softens hearts.
Love restores relationships.
Love brings us back to the center of what matters most.
And the good news is this: the Great Physician never turns away a patient.
His office is always open.
His mercy never runs out.
His healing is always available.
All we have to do is walk in and say,
“Lord, I’m here for my checkup.”
And if you find yourself sitting in the waiting room of life right now, take heart.
The waiting room isn’t wasted time.
Sometimes it’s the very place where God is strengthening your faith, refreshing your spirit, and preparing you for what comes next.
Take a deep breath.
Trust the process.
And remember — God hasn’t forgotten your name.
A little Tonyelle truth for the road:
Sometimes the best thing we can do for our souls is pause long enough to let God check our hearts and refill them with love.
Let’s pray about it.
Lord, thank You for being the Great Physician of our hearts. Search us, renew us, and draw us closer to You. Help us trust You in every season and fill our hearts with Your love so we can reflect it to others. Amen.
If this spoke to your heart, share it with a friend or subscribe for more soul-deep encouragement.
Real Talk. No Fluff. Encouragement with no sugar-coating.
